Brad photographed this group of Southern Oryx (Gemsbok), Oryx gazella, standing on a grassy plain, while we were driving to Okaukuejo Camp in Etosha National Park (Namibia) the afternoon of August 15, 2012. Gemsbok have light brownish-gray to tan colored upperparts with lighter patches on the bottom part of the rump. They appear to be outlined in black. Necks and shoulders are muscular. Legs have white "socks". Both genders have long, straight horns. The female's horns are longer and thinner with a slight outward and rearward curve. Black and white facial markings are distinctive. This antelope appears on the Namibian Coat of Arms. Temperatures were in the mid-60's on this partly cloudy day.
