We were birding and looking for big game at the Goas Waterhole in Etosha National Park (Namibia) the afternoon of August 17, 2012, when we saw this Spotted Hyeana (one of two that we saw), Crocuta crocuta, coming in to the waterhole. This was the only time we saw this species with its dark face, and black spotted tan coat. Females are larger than the male, have more muscle mass, and are more aggressive due to a high level of testosterone (3X that of the male). Also visible in the photo are two South African Shelducks, Tadorna cana, and a Red-billed Teal, Anas erythrorhyncha. Temperatures were in the upper 80's on this beautiful day with clear blue skies.
