Brad photographed this Springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) while we were birding in the vicinity of Okaukuejo Camp in Etosha National Park (Namibia) during the afternoon of August 15, 2012. This medium sized antelope has cinnamon-brown colored upperparts and creamy-white underparts which are separated by a dark reddish-brown band that runs horizontally from the foreleg to the hindleg. Both sexes have heavily-ridged, lyre-shaped horns (female's are a lot more slender). A crest of white hairs runs along the back of the springbok (see photo). These hairs are normally hidden beneath two folds of scent-secreting skin, but become visible (erect) when the animal is alarmed. Temperatures were in the mid-60's with partly cloudy skies.
