After some early morning birding on August 12, 2012, along the Atlantic Coast in Swakopmund (Namibia), we drove to the Swakopmund Airfield for our charter flight to Huab Conservation Area near Kamanjab, Namibia. I took this photograph to show the contrasting topography of the Namib Desert bordered on the west by the Atlantic Ocean and the dry Swakop River bed on the east. Vegetation is present along the river banks and in portions of the river bed itself. Rainfall in this area is typically around 20 mm with the last major rainstorm occurring in 2011. Temperatures were in the low 70's on this sunny morning with partly cloudy skies.
