After a much needed siesta the afternoon of August 14, 2012, Brad and I walked to the Huab reception/dining area where we boarded our safari vehicle for late afternoon birding. Brad photographed this Green-winged Pytilia, Pytilia melba. The male, shown here, has underparts with black and white barring, greenish wings, breast, and upper chest. The forecrown, throat, and iris are reddish. The head and nape are gray. Also known as a Melba Finch, this species is found in most of Africa south of the Sahara. Temperatures were in the upper 80's on this clear, sunny day.
