After a much needed siesta following lunch on August 14, 2012, Brad and I walked to the Huab reception/dining area where we boarded our safari vehicle for late afternoon birding. Brad photographed this male Green-winged Pytilia, Pytilia melba. Like the female, the male has underparts with black and white barring, greenish wings, and a reddish tail and iris. The top of the head and nape are gray. However, the male has an incomplete red facial mask with a reddish throat. The breast and upper chest are greenish. Also known as a Melba Finch, this species is found in most of Africa south of the Sahara. Temperatures were in the upper 80's on this clear, sunny day.
