Brad took this photograph of a male Hartlaub's Francolin (Spurfowl), Francolinus Hartlaubi (Pternistis hartlaubi), while we were on a morning birding trip on August 14, 2012, walking along a grassy area with boulder strewn hills near the dry Huab River. Hartlaub's is a small sized spurfowl with a disproportionately large (decurved bill) for its size. The male has a conspicuous white supercilium, heavily streaked underparts, and buff/brownish upperparts. Granite and sandstone outcrops are typical habitat for the species. Temperatures were in the mid-60's on this clear morning with blue skies.
