We were near the waterhole at Groot Okevi just before noon on August 18, 2012, when this Red-crested Bustard (Korhaan), Lophotus ruficrista, walked across the road. Bustards and Korhaans are long-legged and long-necked terrestrial birds. This species is ID by the creamy-white 'V' marked upperparts. Legs are a dull yellow color. The male, shown here, has a small white patch on either side of the breast. During mating season, a reddish-colored crest (not frequently seen in the field) is raised to attract the female. Temperatures were near 90 degrees on this clear day.
