After birding at Klein Okevi Waterhole for over an hour during mid-morning on August 18, 2012, we drove back to Namutoni Camp. Along the way, Brad photographed a Rufous-crowned (Purple) Roller, Coracias naevius, as it perched in a thornbush. This side view shows the Rufous-crowned (Purple) Roller's square tail, olive-green upperparts, deep purple underparts streaked with white, conspicuous white supercilium, and hooked heavy dark bill. Temperatures were in the mid-80's on this clear day. Note how adroitly the bird places its toes around the thorns!
