This Social Weaver (Philetairus socius) nest was quite spectacular with the early morning light shining on it. Social weavers construct permanent nests on trees such as Acacia or other tall objects (such as telephone poles). In Etosha, Social Weavers typically build their nest in Colophospermum mopane trees. These "apartment-style" nests are the largest built by any bird. They are large enough to house over a hundred pairs of birds and can be composed of several generations at a time. This nest appears like a large haystack in a tree with entrances to it clearly visible. Each entrance is about 3 inches wide and up to 10 inches long. Sharp sticks may be placed by this species to deter predators from entering. Temperatures were in the low 50's on this partly cloudy August 16, 2012, morning.
