We were getting ready to drive to the waterhole at Okondeka when we saw this Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill, Tockus leucomelas, walking in the short grass. Our plans included birding, looking for big game, and having a picnic lunch before we returned to Okaukuejo Camp for a pit stop followed by a drive to Halali Camp (our next overnight stop) in Etosha National Park (Namibia). This Hornbill has a large, decurved yellow bill. The bill doesn't have a large casque (hard protective cartilage) over it. The iris is yellow. Temperatures were in the upper 60's on this partly cloudy August 16, 2012, morning.
