This photograph shows a White-browed Sparrow-Weaver's (Plocepasser mahali) nest. We were up early and out birding around Huab before breakfast on August 14, 2012. Built in an Acacia thorn tree in a bushveld region, this grass nest shows a downward facing tunnel entrance (to keep snakes out?). Nests of one colony are built in one tree overflowing into a second tree if needed. Nests are constructed among the tree's outer branches on the leeward side. White-browed Sparrow-Weavers are monogamous, colonial cooperative breeders. Each colony has one active breeding pair and can vary from two to eleven individuals. Two types of nests exist, breeding (one entrance) and roosting (one entrance at each extremity). Temperatures were in the mid-60's on this clear morning with blue skies.
