We got up early on August 10, 2012, and decided to bird in the Hansa Hotel's courtyard area before breakfast. This pair of Cape Sparrows (Passer melanurus), with the male on the left and the female on the right, nicely illustrates the differences between the sexes. The male shows a distinctive white 'C' shape on each side of its black head and throat. This 'C' shape is smaller and fainter on the female's gray head and breast. Temperatures were in the upper 60's on this cloudy morning.
