Late in the afternoon on August 9, 2012, we were driving to our hotel in Swakopmund after birding in the Walvis Bay/Kuiseb Delta area. We made one last birding stop at a wetlands area where we photographed this Cape Teal (Anas capensis). It is a small duck (14 inches) with a pink upturned bill, reddish iris, and mottled gray feathers distributed throughout its body. This species of dabbling duck actually dives and swims underwater with its wings closed like a true diving duck. Temperatures were in the upper 70's on this clear afternoon.
