We birded the Walvis Bay Saltworks and Walvis Bay area on August 10, 2012. Brad photographed this Common Fiscal (Lanius collaris) as it perched in a small tree near the Walvis Bay Lagoon. It is a member of the shrike family and has a powerful, hooked bill. Underparts are white, and upperparts are black. A white wing-bar extends to the shoulder. The tail is edged in white. Shown here is the Latakoo/South-west African Fiscal (subcoronatus) that has a white superciliary area. Temperatures were in the mid-60's on this overcast afternoon.
