We birded the Walvis Bay Saltworks and Walvis Bay area on August 10, 2012. Brad photographed this Common Fiscal (Lanius collaris) as it foraged on the ground near the Walvis Bay Lagoon. It is a member of the shrike family and has a powerful, hooked bill. Underparts are white, and upperparts are black. A white wing-bar extends to the shoulder. The tail is edged in white. Shown here is the Latakoo/South-west African Fiscal (subcoronatus) that has a white superciliary area. Temperatures were in the mid-60's on this overcast afternoon.
