After a full day of birding the Walvis Bay and Walvis Bay SaltWorks areas on August 10, 2012, we returned to the Hansa Hotel in Swakopmund. Brad and I decided to bird the hotel's courtyard before looking around the city. Brad photographed this Common Waxbill (Estrilda astrild) as perched on the courtyard fountain. The cone-shaped bill, facial skin, and underbelly are a deep red color. The rest of the bird's plumage is mostly grayish-brown that is finely barred with dark brown. Temperatures in Swakopmund were in the mid-60's with overcast skies.
