During the morning of August 10, 2012, we birded Walvis Bay and Walvis Bay Saltworks. Brad photographed this Crowned Cormorant (Microcarbo coronatus) as it perched along the shore. It is a small, black, marine cormorant that has a permanent crest, reddish iris, and an orangish colored lower mandible and bill-base. This individual has a red, bulbous looking face patch. The species is found from Cape Agulhas north to Swakopmund along the coast of southern Africa. Temperatures were in the low 70's on this overcast morning.
