After breakfast on August 11, 2012, we birded coastal areas, bays, and lagoons along with the gravel plains in and around Swakopmund. Brad photographed a Curlew Sandpiper (Calidris ferruginea) as it ran near our vehicle. The gently tapering black bill is evenly decurved. This bird shows some remaining breeding plumage with darker brown upperparts and sploches of brick-red colored underparts. Temperatures were in the mid-70's on this overcast morning.
