Brad took this photograph on August 9, 2012, while we were birding the Kuiseb Delta region near Walvis Bay. The Dune Lark (Certhilauda erythrochlamys) is a Namibian endemic. Its range lies entirely within the Namib sand sea in Namibia and extends from the Kuiseb River in the north to the Koichab area near Luderitz in the south with most of it lying within the Namib-Naukluft Park. The bird's coloration blends in with its environment with its white underparts and dune-red upperparts. Uniquely adapted to a desert environment, the Dune Lark feeds on whatever seeds and insects it finds. Twenty to thirty percent of its diet consists of invertebrates (such as termites and sugar ants) which, when metabolized, provide it sufficient water to survive.
