During the morning of August 10, 2012, Brad photographed this Gray Heron (Ardea cinerea) as it stood on the shore. This Heron's bill and legs are yellowish. A broad black band extends from the forehead to the nape and forms several plumes at the back of the head. The crown, head, and neck are white. This photo shows the bird's white underparts with black streaking down the mid-line. We were in the vicinity of Bird Island at the time this photo was taken. It is a man-made platform off the coast of Namibia between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. It serves as a breeding ground for birds (primarily Cape Cormorants) and yields guano which is collected and sold as fertilizer. Temperatures were in the mid-60's on this overcast morning.
