We birded the Walvis Bay area during the morning of August 10, 2012. Brad photographed this juvenile Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) as it walked in the shallow water of a lagoon. The appearance of an immature Greater Flamingo varies considerably between individuals. This is also true for the age at which definitive plumage appears, typically after 4-6 years. This individual with its black knees is probably in its third year. Temperatures were in the mid-60's on this overcast morning.
