We birded the Walvis Bay Saltworks and Walvis Bay area on August 10, 2012. Brad photographed this Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) waking along the shoreline. We were birding our way to a picnic area where we had lunch. The appearance of immature Greater Flamingoes varies considerably between individuals. This is also true for the age at which definitive plumage appears, typically after 4-6 years. This particular individual with its black knees is in its third year. Temperatures were in the mid-60's on this overcast afternoon.
