We birded the Walvis Bay area during the morning of August 10, 2012. Brad photographed this Pied Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta) as it fed in the shallow water of a costal lagoon. The long, slender, upturned bill is diagnostic of the species. Adults have black plumage while immatures have dark brown. Legs are a pale-bluish color. Temperatures were in the mid-60's on this overcast morning.
