After breakfast on August 11, 2012, we birded coastal areas, bays, and lagoons along with the gravel plains in and around Swakopmund. Brad photographed a Red-capped Lark (Calandrella cinerea) as we slowly drove by it. Luckily, the bird was busy feeding near a pencil bush and didn't seem to notice us. The crown and pectoral patches are rufous. Upperparts are brown, and underparts are a grayish-white (darkness of belly is variable). The Red-capped Lark has a short head crest that is normally not noticeable except when it is raised during courtship displays. Temperatures were in the mid-70's on this overcast morning.
