We were birding in Walvis Bay the morning of August 10, 2012, when Brad photographed this Red-knobbed Coot (Fulica cristata) swimming in a nearby lagoon. This all-black bird has red eyes and a white bill. The white frontal shield is topped with several brownish-colored knobs (these become redder and more conspicuous during breeding season). Temperatures were in the mid-60's on this overcast morning with intermittent drizzle.
