We birded the Walvis Bay Salt Works area during the afternoon of August 10, 2012. This Red-necked Phalarope was swimming in one of the pans. Shown here in non-breeding plumage, Phalaropus lobatus has a thin black bill. Upperparts and top of crown are a dark gray-color. Underparts are white. A prominent black eye patch is visible. Temperatures were in the mid-50's on this misty, overcast afternoon.
