After breakfast on August 11, 2012, we started birding in the Mile 7 SaltWorks area near Swakopmund. This area consists of a series of man-made pans created for the harvesting of salt for human consumption. This Rock Kestrel (Falco rupicolus) was perched on a pole as we drove toward the pan. The male, shown here, has a gray head and is rufous in color with a spotted mantle. Females tend to have more black bands in the central tail feathers than males. Temperatures were in the low 70's on this rainy morning.
