Late in the afternoon on August 9, 2012, we were driving to our hotel in Swakopmund after birding in the Walvis Bay/Kuiseb Delta area. We made one last birding stop at a wetlands area where we photographed this Ruff (Philomachus pugnax). Upperparts of this non-breeding male (ruff) are gray-brown, and the underparts are white with grey mottling on the breast and flanks. The male is larger than the female (reeve) and has a small head, medium-length bill, longish neck and a pot-bellied body. Temperatures were in the upper 70's on this clear afternoon.
