We birded the Walvis Bay Salt Works during the afternoon of August 10, 2012. We photographed these salt pans as we drove through the area. Walvis Bay is one of the largest salt works in Africa. Seawater is fed into large ponds, and water is removed by evaporation. The color of the ponds indicates the salinity level. Microorganisms change their hues as the salinity of the pond increases. In low to mid-salinity ponds, green algae predominate. In middle to high salinity ponds, Dunaliella salina, a microalgae, shifts the color to red (see photo). Temperatures were in the mid-60's on this overcast afternoon.
