After a full day of birding the Walvis Bay and Walvis Bay SaltWorks areas on August 10, 2012, we returned to the Hansa Hotel in Swakopmund. Brad and I decided to bird the hotel's courtyard before looking around the city. This male Southern Masked-Weaver (Ploceus velatus) was busy weaving a new nest. Individual males vary their construction technique from one nest to the next. As they gain experience in nest-building, they become more proficient in the art. Males have several partners and build a succession of nests. Watching this male construct his nest over a period of two days was fascinating. Temperatures were in the mid-60's with overcast skies.
