We birded in the Walvis Bay area on August 9, 2012, and were heading back to Swakopmund when Brad photographed this Southern Pale Chanting-Goshawk (Melierax canorus) as it took off from a perch atop a dune covered with a thornbush. The extensive Kuiseb Delta region provided us with opportunities to view many interesting desert species. The coral-pink colored cere and legs, pale gray upperparts and chest, upright stance, and white rump are characteristic field marks of this species. This photo shows the bird's white underwing and extensive black coloration on the primaries.
