After a full day of birding the Walvis Bay and Walvis Bay SaltWorks areas on August 10, 2012, we returned to the Hansa Hotel in Swakopmund. Brad and I decided to bird the hotel's courtyard before looking around the city. Brad photographed this Speckled Pigeon (Columba guinea) when it flew in to the courtyard fountain for a drink. Upperparts are deep red with white spots. The head and underparts are gray. A distinctive red facial mask surrounds a yellow iris. Temperatures in Swakopmund were in the mid-60's with overcast skies.
