This photograph shows salt pans from a failed attempt at mining salt from ground water. It also shows the gravel plains and the "moonscape-like" environment around Swakopmund. We were birding in the Namib-Naukluft National Park of Namibia which encompasses part of the Namib Desert (considered the world's oldest desert) and the Naukluft mountain range (see horizon of photo). Temperatures were in the upper 70's on this overcast morning.
