I photographed a (Western) Banded Snake-Eagle (Circaetus cinerascens) that was perched along the shore of the Zambezi River above Victoria Falls the morning of August 25, 2012. We were out on an early morning boat trip to bird and look for big game in the Mosi-oa-Tunya (smoke that thunders) National Park's shoreline areas. Temperatures on this sunny day were in the upper 60's. This Snake-Eagle is a small, ash-brown colored eagle that has a single broad, dark tail-bar (visible on the undertail in flight or when perched). Large yellow eyes are set amid a head with loose feathers giving the bird's head a rounded appearance.
