Brad photographed an African Finfoot (Podica senegalensis) as it walked along the shoreline of the Zambezi River above Victoria Falls the morning of August 25, 2012. We were out on an early morning boat trip to bird and look for big game in the National Park areas along the shoreline. Temperatures on this sunny day were in the upper 60's. Three species of Finfoots occur worldwide with senegalensis the only one occurring in Africa. They are similar in appearance to ducks and cormorants but are not related to them. The bill and legs are a bright orangish-red color. Underparts are white. Dark upperparts are spotted white. Females have a white line extending from the base of the bill over the eye and down the neck to the side of the nape.
