This pair of African Skimmers (Rynchops flavirostris) was flying high over the Zambezi River above Victoria Falls the morning of August 25, 2012. We were out on an early morning boat trip to bird and look for big game in the Mosi-oa-Tunya (smoke that thunders) National Park's shoreline areas. Temperatures on this sunny day were in the low 70's. This black and white tern-like bird's bright orange bill is tipped with yellow and has a distinctive bill structure. The lower, blade-like mandible is longer than the upper mandible. As the bird flies over water, it immerses its lower mandible as it 'skims' the water. If prey is encountered, the bill snaps shut. The sleek black upperparts, white underparts, and underwing coloration are visible in the photo.
