After returning from our boat trip to bird along the shorline areas of Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park on the Zambezi River above Victoria Falls, Joanne and I joined our VENT guide, Geoff, for some additional birding on the grounds of The Royal Livingstone Hotel. Brad photographed a Black-collared Barbet (Lybius torquatus) that was perched in a flowering tree. It has a bright red forehead, face, and foreneck. A broad black collar, yellowish chest, brown wings, and a stout bill are characteristics of this relative of the woodpeckers. Temperatures on this sunny day (August 25, 2012) were in the low 80's.
