After lunch and a brief siesta on the afternoon of August 25, 2012, we left the Royal Livingstone Hotel in a safari vehicle and drove to an entrance to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park for a late afternoon birding and big game expedition. We got excellent looks at a Brown-hooded Kingfisher, Halcyon albiventria, as it perched near the Zambezi River. Temperatures on this sunny day were in the low 90's. Underparts are buffy. The brown head is streaked as are the breast and flanks. The wings and shoulders of this female are brown. Iridescent blue coloration can be seen on the wing edges, tail, and rump.
