On August 25, 2012, we left the Royal Livingstone Hotel in a safari vehicle and drove to a different entrance to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park for a late afternoon birding and big game expedition. Brad photographed a juvenile Common Warthog, Phacochoerus africanus, that was walking on the side of the roadway. Temperatures on this sunny day were in the low 90's. A wild member of the pig family, the warthog lives in grassland, savanna, and woodland habitats in Sub-Saharan Africa. Piglets begin grazing at about two to three weeks and are weaned by six months. Young warthogs quickly attain mobility and stay close to their mothers for defense. This juvenile was travelling with an adult female.
