On August 25, 2012, we left the Royal Livingstone Hotel in a safari vehicle and drove to a different entrance to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park for a late afternoon birding and big game expedition. Brad photographed a female White (Square-lipped) Rhinoceros, Ceratotherium simum, and her seven month old calf that were foraging in a grassland near the roadway. The white rhinos in this area of the park are protected by armed guards....entry to the area is restricted. Temperatures on this sunny day were in the low 90's. Gestation lasts about sixteen months. Calves are weaned anywhere from one to two years after birth. The typical interval between calves is two to three years.
