On August 25, 2012, we left the Royal Livingstone Hotel in a safari vehicle and drove to a different entrance to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park for a late afternoon birding and big game expedition. Brad photographed a male White (Square-lipped) Rhinoceros, Ceratotherium simum, while it was foraging in a grassland near the roadway. The white rhinos in this area of the park are protected by armed guards....entry to the area is restricted. Temperatures on this sunny day were in the low 90's. All rhinoceroses have poor eyesight, but good hearing and an excellent sense of smell. Dominant males are usually solitary and occupy smaller home ranges than females. They will, however, tolerate females and sub-adult males in their territory and will attempt to keep receptive females from leaving. Any invading bull will quickly be challenged.
