On August 25, 2012, we left the Royal Livingstone Hotel in a safari vehicle and drove to a different entrance to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park for a late afternoon birding and big game expedition. Brad photographed a male White (Square-lipped) Rhinoceros, Ceratotherium simum, that was foraging in a grassland near the roadway. The white rhinos in this area of the park are protected by armed guards....entry to the area is restricted. Temperatures on this sunny day were in the low 90's. The white rhinoceros has suffered from habitat loss and poaching for the international rhino horn trade. Because of this, many southern white rhino are now concentrated within protected areas such as fenced sanctuaries, conservancies, rhino conservation areas, and intensive protection zones.
