After lunch and a brief siesta on the afternoon of August 25, 2012, we left the Royal Livingstone Hotel in a safari vehicle and drove to an entrance to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park for a late afternoon birding and big game expedition. We got excellent looks at a Hooded Vulture, Necrosyrtes monachus, as it perched near the Zambezi River. Temperatures on this sunny day were in the low 90's. The bird has brown upper- and underparts with downy feathers extending from the crown to the hindneck that form a hood over the head.
