After lunch and a brief siesta on the afternoon of August 25, 2012, we left the Royal Livingstone Hotel in a safari vehicle and drove to an entrance to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park for a late afternoon birding and big game expedition. A Purple Roller, Coracias naevius, was perched near the roadway. The nape and back are an olive-green color. Underparts are deep purple with heavy white streaking. A dark line through the eye is highlighted by a conspicuous white eyebrow. Temperatures on this sunny day were in the low 90's.
