Brad and I walked down to the banks of the Zambezi River on the grounds of the Royal Livingstone Hotel in Livingstone, Zambia, late in the afternoon on August 24, 2012, to meet up with the rest of our group to bird and visit Victoria Falls. We photographed a female Trumpeter Hornbill (Bycanistes bucinator) that we saw perched amid the leafy branches overhead. A medium-sized hornbill, it has a large gray casque on its bill. The eyes are brown or red and are surrounded by bare, pink-colored skin. The belly, underwing, and rump are white, while the rest of the bird is black. Temperatures were in the upper 80's on this bright, sunny day with clear blue skies.
