I photographed a White-crowned Lapwing (Vanellus albiceps) as it stood on the shore of the Zambezi River above Victoria Falls in the morning sunlight of August 25, 2012. We were out on an early morning boat trip to bird and look for big game in the Mosi-oa-Tunya (smoke that thunders) National Park's shoreline areas. Temperatures on this sunny day were in the upper 60's. This medium-sized wader's wings and tail are patterned in black and white. The back is brown, and underparts are white. The head is the most striking feature with a large white band running from the base of the bill, up and over the crown. The iris is a pale yellow with the facial wattles and black-tipped mandibles a darker yellow. The yellow legs have a grayish or olive-colored tinge. The bird's prominent black wing-spur is visible in the photo.
