This group of White-fronted Bee-Eaters (Merops bullockoides) was busy socializing near their nests in a sandy bank on the shoreline of the Zambezi River above Victoria Falls the morning of August 25, 2012. We were out on an early morning boat trip to bird and look for big game in the Mosi-oa-Tunya (smoke that thunders) National Park's shoreline areas. Temperatures on this sunny day were in the upper 60's. The forehead and throat are white and are separated from each other by a black 'mask'. The lower part of the throat is a vibrant red, while the nape, chest, and belly are a cinnamon color. The remaining upperparts are greenish. Small colonies are typical (up to 200 individuals), and nests are built by digging holes in cliffs or earthen banks.
