This photograph of four Northern (Hall's) Giant-Petrels resting was taken while we were on Godthul, South Georgia, on the morning of December 31, 2006. The temperature was in the low 30's with light snow showers. This was our fifteenth Zodiac trip. The reddish tip to a yellowish bill is indicative of this species. Female giant-petrels prefer to eat fish while male giant-petrels prefer carrion. Giant-petrels are known locally as "stinkers".
