This photograph of a leucistic Antarctic Fur Seal and nursing pup was taken as we hiked the shoreline of the Salisbury Plain on the north coast of South Georgia on January 1, 2007. The temperature was in the low 40's on this partly cloudy morning. This was our sixteenth Zodiac trip. The Salisbury Plain lies in the Bay of Isles area and is rich in wildlife including approximately 250,000 King Penguins. A leucistic seal occurs at the rate of 1/8,000. This factor is a useful tool for biologists to estimate fur seal populations.
